Book cover: Terrine

Terrine by Stephane Reynaud

Published by Phaidon

Priced £14.95

Stéphane Reynaud is the French author of the acclaimed book Pork & Sons and a restauranteur in Montreuil, France. The grandson of a butcher, he has focused his latest cookbook on a less familiar topic: the terrine. The oft-feared dish is technically a mixture of meat, fish, or vegetables that’s prepared in advance and allowed to set in its container before being sliced and served. It is one of Reynaud’s favourites, and he’s devoted the book to making the rest of us feel comfortable with it too. I love this book, to the extent I went and spend 40 quid on a cast-iron terrine dish!

Book cover: Piri Piri Starfish

Piri Piri Starfish by Tessa Kiros

Published by Murdoch Books

Priced £22.50

From the author of the mouth-wateringly beautiful books, Falling Cloudberries, Twelve and Apples For Jam, this book carries on the rich tradition of great design and wonderful food.

In Piri Piri Starfish, Tessa Kiros takes her family to live and travel in Portugal where she is captivated by this serene and ancient country and charmed by the old-fashioned way of doing things. Portugal has everything she loves – the markets, the sea, the beautiful old pousadas – but she would have gone for the food alone.

Book cover: Seaweed and Eat it – a family foraging and cooking adventure

Seaweed and Eat it – a family foraging and cooking adventure by Fiona Houston and Xa Milne

Published by Virgin Books

Priced £10.99

Here at Gladstone’s we love our books on foraging and wild food. From the seminal works of Roger Phillips to Fakenham-based Peter Jordan, here is another worthy addition to our shelves.

Described in their PR guff as ‘the foodie’s answer to The Dangerous Book for Boys, and a nostalgic journey of rediscovery for the whole family’, this book is a joy. Part cookbook, part natural history guide, with tasty recipes, fascinating folklore and inspiring ideas for seasonal feasts, Seaweed leads you through the process of identifying, learning about and cooking unusual and wild native foods.

Book cover: Fruits of the Hedgerow and Unusual Garden Fruits

Fruits of the Hedgerow and Unusual Garden Fruits by Charlotte Popescu

Priced £6.99

Another lovely book from Charlotte Popescu, the author of Hens in the Garden, Eggs in the Kitchen, amongst others.

This book is written to celebrate the sometimes forgotten fruits and nuts in the hedgerows and old gardens for those adventurous to look. There are recipes for crab apples, blackberries, damsons, sloes, hips and haws, elderflowers and elderberries. Quinces, medlars, figs and mulberries are included plus hazelnuts, chestnuts, walnuts and poppy seeds.

The history and nutritional values of each fruit are also included and suggestions on where to find them in the countryside/ A really lovely book that is remarkably good value too.
